Colorado Proud Celebrates Colorado's Birthday and Colorado Proud Month on August 1

Free Admission to History Colorado Center, Community Celebration and Farmers' Market

DENVER, CO, July 29, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The "Choose Colorado Pop-Up Picnics" - a summer-long series of farm fresh, modern picnics celebrating locally grown produce - will pop up at the History Colorado Center in Denver on August 1 to celebrate the state's 139th birthday. The History Colorado Center, located at 1200 Broadway in Denver, will host a free celebration event that includes food, music, dance, hands-on activities and educational opportunities that recognize Colorado's past and present.

The month of August was proclaimed by Governor Hickenlooper as "Colorado Proud Month," so to honor the designation, the event will celebrate the state's local produce with a farmers' market and special guest appearances from Commissioner of Agriculture Don Brown and Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture Chris Wiseman. Colorado Day runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the History Colorado Center will offer free admission until 5:00 p.m. that day.

"The event is a great way to recognize Colorado's past and celebrate the people that continue to make the state a great place to work and live," said Wendy White, marketing specialist for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "We are excited to host a pop-up picnic on Colorado Day as it allows us to educate consumers on the benefits of buying and eating local produce while celebrating the farmers, ranchers and food producers that contribute to the vitality of the state."

The "Choose Colorado Pop-Up Picnics" run through September 5 and take place at 20 festivals, farmers' markets, grocery stores and concerts along the Front Range communities and Western Slope. It integrates agricultural communities and celebrates farmers and produce growers, while educating consumers along the journey.

About Colorado Proud
The Colorado Proud program was created by the Colorado Department of Agriculture in 1999 to promote Colorado food and agricultural products that are grown, raised or processed in the state. The goal of Colorado Proud is to make it easier for consumers to identify and purchase Colorado products by labeling them with the Colorado Proud logo. In 1999, the program started with 65 companies; and now, the Colorado Proud program has more than 2,200 members that include farmers, ranchers, processors, restaurants, retailers and associations statewide. Colorado Proud Pop-Up Picnic events are funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Agriculture through the USDA's Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
