AURORA, CO, May 02, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to the American Cancer Society, there are 136, 830 new cases of colorectal cancer (a form of cancer that appears in the rectum or colon) in the United States for the year of 2014, and this number can increase by the end of this year. As the third most common cancer, reports expect that it will cause 50, 310 deaths this year. It's a jarring reality, but modern technology is helping many patients fight colorectal cancer.

"In most cases, colorectal cancer begins as a polyp, which is a growth. There are polyps that are non-cancerous. Adenomas polyps have a 95 percent chance of being cancerous, and they should be removed as early as possible," explains Dr. Chin.

How is a polyp detected? A colonoscopy is the primary procedure for detecting colon cancer, but a sigmoidoscopy can also be used. The two can detect polyps and ultimately colorectal cancer.

The procedure for a colonoscopy involves inserting a flexible tube with a video camera attached to take pictures inside the colon. It takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete a colonoscopy.

Many people ignore getting tested, and it's an unfortunate choice. The testing isn't a difficult process-it's the treatment that takes a toll on patients. The earlier colorectal cancer is found, the easier it is to treat.

"A sigmoidoscopy is used to specifically look at the lower colon and rectum. These type of tests are important for patients who are over the age of 50 or have a higher risk of colorectal cancer," explains Dr. Chin.

Talk to your doctor about the factors that raise the risk of colorectal cancer. It's better to be prepared than surprised. Dr. Chin's office in Aurora provides colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and endoscopy testing.
