BURY, ENGLAND, April 08, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ventilation plays a critical role at EDF Energy's new West Burton Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station. Bury based Senior Hargreaves is to supply and install specially engineered ductwork under a two million pound contract awarded by mechanical services engineers SPIE Matthew Hall.

The project requires pre-insulated process ductwork, HVAC ductwork, emergency smoke control and extract ductwork and corrosion resistant (PVC) ducts. Due to the high-speed building programme, Hargreaves will be supplying equipment to a strict batch schedule with ductwork pre-kitted and including all the necessary fittings and consumables for fast site installation. Each colour-coded batch of ventilation equipment will be supplied with detailed identification documentation and packing lists. First ductwork shipment began in November and these will continue until April 2010.

Temperature resisting process ductwork, designed for sustained exposure to hot exhaust gasses, will be supplied for the main turbine halls. Within the building envelope this will be protected by galvanising, while externally, a long life paint finish will be applied.

Hargreaves HFD fire duct will also be used throughout the buildings to provide emergency smoke control and removal. This is a heavily pre-insulated duct designed and tested to achieve two-hour fire resistance with internal temperatures of up to 400 degrees to meet requirements for stability, integrity and insulation. Another specialist construction used on the site is corrosion resistant PVC ductwork for battery and chemical rooms. Standard ventilation ductwork will be used elsewhere on the 12 building complex for general comfort ventilation and air-conditioning.

The West Burton CCGT is an innovative project style for the UK, but is a proven design and construction methodology that has been successfully used by EDF Energy at other European locations. EDF Thermal Engineering in Paris was responsible for all engineering and procurement and is the principal management contractor. The new power station will enter service in 2011, will serve up to 1.5 million homes and has a projected operating life of 25 years.
