Community Fundraisers Are Win-Win For All Says Nonprofit Conversation
In a down economy nonprofits are struggling to stay afloat. The ALS Association is fortunate to have dedicated donors and volunteers spontaneously create community fundraising events.

COLUMBIA, MD, February 15, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Any nonprofit is lucky to have committed volunteers, but when those volunteers and donors take it on themselves to raise money, it is sweet success for a nonprofit's bottom line.

"The nonprofit sector is being hit hard by the economy," said Bunnie Riedel, host of Nonprofit Conversation. "Creative fundraising is the order of the day. The ALS Association of Greater New York is fortunate to have a base of donor/volunteers that gladly host events to raise funds for the organization."

The "Community Fundraisers" range from happy hours to art auctions to golf tournaments.

"Some of our more successful fundraising enterprises last year were the ones that our donors created and produced themselves," said Lon Cohen, Director of Communications. "Interestingly, many people approach us about a fully formulated idea that they plan to implement on their own. We've had a bunch of people run marathons in memory of a relative who died from ALS, a few Golf Outings, a few dinners at local restaurants, happy hours, one Manhattan art auction and a lemonade stand."

5,000 new cases of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, are reported in the United States each year. The mission of the ALS Association is to:

"To lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig's Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support."

"The Community Fundraisers are a tangible model of what can happen when a nonprofit cultivates a dedicated corps of donors and volunteers," said Riedel. "These fundraisers are something every nonprofit should consider."
