Comprehending New Camp Care Package Policies

Understanding why summer camps are tightening care package restrictions makes it easier to avoid a returned package!

Can you imagine what it is like to deal with 20+ large, heavy boxes each day?

FAIRFIELD, CT, May 25, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Oooof! When I was a kid, anything could go in a camp care package: brownies, water pistols, gum, cash, giant teddy bears.....

So why are so many camps changing their care package policies? It may seem harsh, but let's take a look at the reasons for some of the more common restrictions:

1. No Food- Few camps allow food for some very good reasons. Food attracts unwanted insects & animals. More children have food allergies (up 18% in the past 20 years per the CDC), and many kids would prefer the sweets and snacks in a care package to the camp food.
2. Limiting Number of Packages- Yep. Someone at the camp needs to sort through and deliver all those packages. At many camps someone needs to open each care package to check for banned items (food again!). The boxes and packing materials need to be broken down and disposed of. The toys and games need to fit in to a tiny cabin or tent. It certainly makes sense that some camps limit how often a camper can receive packages.
3. Limiting the Size of the Packages- I think this is a great idea! Some camps will limit the size of the box, while others will allow only large envelopes (think USPS 8"x12" padded envelopes). Can you imagine what it is like to deal with 20+ large, heavy boxes each day?
4. Taboo Items- Water guns are usually a big no no as are any toys shaped like a weapon. Silly string, an environmental menace, is often off limits. Anything electronic is rarely allowed at camps.
5. No Care Packages at All! This is a bummer for many people (including owners of camp care package companies), but it takes the burden of policing care packages completely away from the camp.

Before you begin packing your child's camp care package, check the camp's current care package policies. If you have any doubts about what you are thinking of sending, error on the side of caution! Card games, craft supplies, and puzzles are all great choices.

Does your child's camp have any restrictions on care packages? What are they? Do you agree with them?
