Coral Springs Personal Injury Attorney Urges: Check Your Insurance Coverage for Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Many people have no idea they are driving unprotected and can lose out on the ability to collect damages when they do not have the proper coverage. Check your insurance coverage for uninsured motorist coverage.

BOCA RATON, FL, February 15, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The law in Florida requires people to simply carry Personal Injury Protection coverage, commonly referred to as PIP coverage, which protects the insured and gives only medical coverage and 60% of lost wages for themselves and occupants of the vehicle. Florida also requires property damage coverage, which means your car will be repaired (up to the insurance limits) if the at fault driver is carrying the minimum coverage required by law. However, many people in South Florida do not carry bodily injury coverage, which will afford a means of recovery if they cause injury to anyone involved in the accident. This Uninsured Motorist coverage, or UM coverage, protects you in the event the person who causes the injuries is without bodily injury coverage, or does not have enough insurance coverage.

"With the economy the way it is, more people are cutting back on expenses and carrying the minimum required by law. This means there is even a higher chance that the person causing the accident may not have proper insurance for the injuries they cause," says William A. Heller, a personal injury lawyer in South Florida who has been representing injured individuals for more than two decades. "Health insurance may pick up your medical bills beyond the $10,000 of PIP coverage, but it will not provide the money damages for lost wages or pain and suffering from the accident."

Heller urges people to check their insurance coverage. "The important coverage to have is Uninsured Motorist coverage or Underinsured Motorist coverage. This will basically let your own insurance policy step-in the shoes of the at fault driver who does not have any bodily injury coverage or does not have enough bodily injury coverage for the injuries they have caused," says the Coral Springs Personal Injury Attorney.

In addition to the PIP coverage, it is also important to report claims as soon as possible. It is very common to see the insurance company allege a person's complaint was not part of the accident since they did not bring it up right away. Many people are afraid to report accidents to their insurance carrier or delay getting medical treatment for fear their rates will go up. This will usually be a mistake that can be used against the person later, by suggesting the person wasn't seriously hurt since they delayed getting treatment. Heller states "It is not unusual for injuries to appear a day or two after the accident. Therefore, it is always a good idea to get checked out by a doctor if you feel anything out of the ordinary. If things resolve, you can always consider yourself fortunate and move on. If not, the documentation supporting the complaints soon after the accident is important for getting the right treatment and documenting the injuries."
