MESA, AZ, December 17, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It was a cool victory for cosmetology students at Olympian University, 1460 Missouri Ave. in Las Cruces when they captured 1st place with their Ice Queen entry at the recent Committed to Excellence Hair Forum in Fort Worth, Texas.
Cosmetology students Norma Romero, Anita Martinez, Anna Lueras and Model Melisa Caro, who were considered underdogs at the competition because they had only been in school four to five weeks, beat out 39 teams from 19 different schools with their winning entry "Ice Queen" in the three-person team competition.
The team had 55 minutes in the arena to construct the hair and make up for their entry. Oodles of styling gel and crimping tools were used to create the illusion of frozen locks with dripping icicles. The students used glitter, frosty whites and silvers to augment the glacial design, and acrylic paint was used on the model's nails to further the fashionably frozen motif. The students designed the costume and arctic-like background earlier that day.
"The story behind the students in this competition was almost like the plot in a movie," said Dora Borunda, director of Olympian University in Las Cruces. "Some of the original team members had to back out at the last minute and it looked like they might not even have a team. The students were definitely underdogs as they hadn't worked together very long, and they had only been enrolled in school for four to five weeks. There was a lot of tension, but in the end they worked through it and pulled off a magnificent entry that was worthy of the first place award."
The team won against future cosmetologists from nine beauty schools in Texas, including ITS Academy and Aladdin Beauty College; six schools in New Mexico and Oklahoma, including the Olympian University campuses and Aladdin Beauty College, as well as two Arizona schools, the International Academy of Hair Design and International Academy of Hair Design, College of Hair & Aesthetics.
The competition encouraged students to pull out the stops on their themed entry to create a hair and makeup idea that would wow the judges, spectators and fellow students. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
