The endless descriptions - possibly too many - of the latest designer gowns and million-dollar necklaces take the reader into a fantasy world that few could ever aspire to. The rich are indeed different from you or me and involvement with the characters in Crazy Rich Asians does give the reader some inkling of the culture and lifestyle of these pampered beings.

Despite their spoiled, arrogant entitlement, not to mention vicious bitchiness, not all of the characters are unappealing and some do win our hearts. Interestingly, the ending at once provides unexpected and clever plot twists while also causing a complete reversal in attitudes among our favourite characters and a kind of epiphany concerning their elitist lifestyles.

Novels and movies about social and economic elites - wherever they are found in the world - abound; one scene in the book where a young, casually dressed Astrid is treated snootily by a Parisian sales clerk is strongly reminiscent of Julia Roberts' shopping expedition in Pretty Woman, for example. But one is not expected to take it all seriously, Kwan's novel is clearly tongue-in-cheek. Crazy Rich Asians is frothy and light hearted - a great book for the beach or a long train or plane ride.
