Currency Dealer, Antique Money, Now Buys Rare Treasury Notes

    NORCROSS, GA, May 16, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Currency dealer, Antique Money, is buying treasury notes issued in 1890 and 1891. These notes were backed by silver bullion, and therefore also known as coin notes.

1890 Treasury Notes
The basic design of notes from these two years is the same. However, the back of the notes is different. The 1890 series notes have bright green reverse sides with an ornate overprint. Because of that overprint, these are sometimes called ornate backs. They are more valuable than those in the 1891 series.

The $20 bills in the 1890 series are particularly rare. This is the highest denomination that is collectible because the higher denomination notes are prohibitively rare. The 1890 $100 treasury notes have an engraving that looks like two watermelons, so they are known as watermelon notes.

1891 Treasury Notes
The 1891 treasury notes have a plain back that is mostly green and white. They are more available than the 1890 notes, and relatively affordable to old currency buyers. John Marshall is pictured on the left hand side of each bill.

Although these notes were printed in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $1000, those of $10 and higher are particularly rare, and valuable to collectors of old money, especially when they are in good condition. The most common is the 1891 $1 bill.

The 1891 $20 treasury notes used to be rare. However, when a large supply was discovered about a decade ago, the price dropped. According to Manning Garrett, the owner of Antique Money, "A $20 bill from either 1890 or 1891 should still get $1,000 from collectors of antique bank notes."
