Cybersecurity Growing Concern for Government and Business
Doug Farry, Managing Director of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, Shares Insights at Statewide Events Marking National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

SAN DIEGO, CA, October 29, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Doug Farry, managing director of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP (MLA), has been tapped to share his cyberspace, e-commerce and technology knowledge with business and government leaders gathering to discuss cyber threats, defense approaches and future challenges as part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

October is dedicated to raising the profile of computer security in the U.S., "making it a perfect time for companies to consider current security practices, procedures and solutions," said Farry who is based in MLA's San Diego office and co-chair of the firm's Cybersecurity Working Group and chair of its Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) division.

At the National Defense Industrial Association's San Diego Cybersecurity Symposium scheduled for October 26-28, Farry will join other noted authorities to provide operating and technical personnel in industry and government with an unclassified high-level picture of cybersecurity threats and the most current counter cyber-espionage solutions.

Companies such as San Diego-based ESET - an industry pioneer in the development of proactive threat protection software - are also working to educate and protect consumers and businesses from the growing threat of cybercrime.

"Cybercrime has evolved from an infrequent annoyance to organized crime's biggest moneymaker - and it's growing exponentially," said Jeff Debrosse, senior director of research for North America, ESET LLC. "Educating consumers and businesses on cyber security best practices continues to be the key element in fighting this rising threat, and is the foundation of ESET's "Securing Our eCity" initiative."

Continued Farry, confidentiality of sensitive information, the integrity of e-commerce and the resilience of digital infrastructures are hot buttons in both the public and private sectors.

"It is vital to national security and personal privacy that the tools and information needed to practice safe online behavior are readily available," said Farry, whose firm works to protect its clients' business interests in an increasingly complex global and Internet-based marketplace.

At the Cybersecurity West Conference in Sacramento held earlier this month, Farry said commercial as well as government networks are increasingly under attack from hackers, corporate spies, identity thieves and even global terrorists.

"Private sector companies are increasingly vulnerable to the same cyber-threats facing government organizations," he said. "The consequences of a cyber-attack range from simple inconvenience to financial catastrophe, and in some cases, damage to privately-owned critical infrastructure."

He warned that companies "not adequately addressing these risks could find their sensitive data exposed and an increased exposure to litigation as well."

In addition, Farry said private sector companies could experience a loss of government sales opportunities if they don't comply with federal requirements to ensure that their products and services are cyber secure. These standards and practices being developed for the public sector will have a major impact on what private sector companies are required to buy in order to meet the new federal laws.

The overall business opportunity presented by the emerging federal cybersecurity market is vast, said Farry. "Companies who specialize in cybersecurity-related products and services will likely see an unprecedented government spending spree."

Even those companies exclusively focused on non-governmental sales should seek these opportunities or at least understand the impact of these government activities on their competitive environment.

"This decade offers incredible business opportunities to develop new solutions to the challenges that information-related technologies have presented," said Farry.
