Dan Shoemaker Recognized for Achievements in Cyber Security

Dr. Shoemaker has published nine books and more than 200 professional papers



He is currently a Professor of Cybersecurity and the Director of the Graduate Program in Cybersecurity at the University of Detroit Mercy Center for Cyber Security and Intelligence Studies.

    BELLEVILLE, MI, January 09, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dan Shoemaker, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With nearly 50 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Shoemaker is currently a Professor of Cybersecurity and the Director of the Graduate Program in Cybersecurity at the University of Detroit Mercy Center for Cyber Security and Intelligence Studies. For 28 years, he was the Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Systems, stepping down in 2012. Since 2004 he has been the Principal Investigator for UDM's National Security Agency (NSA) designated Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance (IAE), as well as Principal Investigator for the NSA CAE in Cyber Defense Education (CDE).

Prior to pursuing a career in higher education, he attended the University of Michigan, where he received a Bachelor's Degree. He also received two Master's Degrees from Eastern Michigan University. Finally, he earned a PhD at the University of Michigan in 1978. He has published nine books in his field of expertise, in addition to more than 200 scholarly papers and done hundreds of public speaking engagements. Some of his most widely regarded books include, ''Cybersecurity: The Essential Body of Knowledge", "The Complete Guide to Cybersecurity Risk & Controls", "Implementing Cybersecurity: A Guide to the National Institute of Standards and Technology Risk Management Framework" and "A Guide to the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Framework 2.0."

As an expert in the field, Dr. Shoemaker has served as the Chair of Workforce Training and Education with the Software Assurance Initiative at the Department of Homeland Security. He was also a subject matter expert with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, and consultant in supply chain risk management with the Department of Defense, CIO-Office. In addition, Dr. Shoemaker was the Principal Investigator for the Sl.6 million-dollar Software Assurance Education Curriculum Project through the Department of Defense. Locally, he is the Co-Chair of the Midwest Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (MCISSE) which is the regional coalition for cybersecurity education, and as a member of the Executive Board of Directors with The National Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE).

He is also internationally recognized. He was an honorary faculty member with London Southbank University and in that capacity, he participated in the first International Cybersecurity Forum in Paris in 2009. He still works extensively with British academics at Warwick and Oxford University on cybersecurity topics. And he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Forum which is an internationally recognized think-tank for exchange and networking among governments at national, regional & local levels, private & public organizations, research & development experts.

Throughout his career, Dr. Shoemaker has been noted for many achievements in the field of software engineering. He is credited as one of the original participants in the Software Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. In that capacity he is one of the authors of the Department of Homeland Security's Common Body of Knowledge to Produce, Acquire and Sustain Software. As Dr. Shoemaker moves forward in his career, he intends to continue teaching, writing and speaking in his fields of expertise, as well as travel with his wife Tamara.
