Dance Historian Nancy Reynolds Honored by Marquis Who's Who

Nancy Reynolds is a former professional dancer who helps preserve the legacy of George Balanchine



    BROOKLYN, NY, March 27, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nancy Reynolds has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dance has always been an important element of Nancy Reynolds' life. She began her professional career as a member of the New York City Ballet, with her first performance in 1957. Ms. Reynolds remained with the company until 1961, after which time she pursued a career in book publishing as an editor. However, dance remained on the forefront of her mind. In 1979, she served as director of research for the book, "Choreography by George Balanchine: A Catalogue of Works," and was editorial director of the online edition, 2007. She was later the director of research for a television special on George Balanchine, a prominent figure in the world of ballet.

In 1994, Ms. Reynolds began her relationship with The George Balanchine Foundation in New York City. In addition to functioning as the director of research, she conceived and established the foundation's Video Archives program. Ms. Reynolds continues to direct the program, which consists of the Archive of Lost Choreography and the Interpreters Archive, to this day. To prepare for her career, Ms. Reynolds studied dance at the School of American Ballet, Julliard School of Music, and the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in art history from Columbia University. Ms. Reynolds completed further studies at Paris-Sorbonne University, the Goethe Institute, the University of Chicago and Sarah Lawrence College. She accrued several years of experience in book publishing prior to becoming a freelance writer in 1972.

Ms. Reynolds is the author of "Repertory in Review: Forty Years of the New York City Ballet," which was published in 1977 and received the De la Torre Bueno prize, and "The Dance Catalogue: A Complete Guide to Today's World of Dance," published in 1979. She co-authored "In Performance," published in 1980, "Dance Classics," published in 1991, and "No Fixed Points: Dance in the Twentieth Century," published in 2003. She conceived and edited "Remembering Lincoln," published in 2007, and has contributed to such professional journals as Dance Magazine and Ballet Review, as well as to the New York Times.

Additionally, Ms. Reynolds is a past president of the Dance Critics Association, which honored her with the Calliope Award in 2012. Her further professional affiliations include the Society of Dance History Scholars, the Society for Dance Research, the American Society for Theatre Research, and the European Association of Dance Historians. In 2013 she received one of the dance world's most prestigious awards, the "Bessie," for "outstanding service to the field of dance." In 2017 the New York Public Library agreed to accept her donation of dance papers and related material to the Dance Division of the Library for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, New York. Ms. Reynolds' accomplishments were featured in the 50th through 69th editions of Who's Who in America, the 1st through 3rd editions of Who's Who in Entertainment, the 1st edition of Who's Who in Media and Communication, and the 17th through 28th editions of Who's Who of American Women. She has also appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World.
