David F. Marshall, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    WINONA, MN, December 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present David F. Marshall, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Marshall celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Professor emeritus of English at the University of North Dakota (UND) since 2009, Dr. Marshall's career began after completing a BA at Texas Christian University (1960) and an MDiv at Union Theological Seminary, New York (1964). During his intern year (62-63), he served as the first full-time Protestant Campus Pastor at Utah State University and taught freshman composition and Old Testament as literature. After graduation, he became articles editor and advertising manager for United Church Herald, later A.D. Magazine, and began work on his doctorate in linguistics at New York University. He became editor-in-chief of Pilgrim Press and director of book publishing for United Church Press in Philadelphia (68-72) and taught freshman composition part-time at Villanova University in spring (1972). That year, he became assistant and later associate professor of English at Barton College in Wilson, NC. While there, he completed his dissertation and received the PhD from NYU (1975). While at Barton, he was a Lilly Visiting Scholar at Duke University (1976-77). He was also a visiting seminar scholar at Stanford (1979). In 1980, he became an associate and then professor of English at UND.

While at UND, Dr. Marshall received three senior Fulbright fellowships: Nanjing University, People's Republic of China (86-87); University of Hungary (Eotvos Lorand), Budapest (92-93), and the University of Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria (00-01). He was visiting associate professor at Arizona University at the graduate ESL program and then a consultant to their Federal Court Spanish Language Translators Project. He had two more visiting seminar scholar grants: Stanford University (1984) and University of Wisconsin-Madison (1990).

Dr. Marshall has been cited in the 4th edition of Who's Who in American Education for his work. Authoring many articles and chapters in books as well as co-editing several issues of The International Journal of the Sociology of Language where he was later selected to the editorial board, Dr. Marshall lately in retirement has written on Shakespeare: "Why "Julius Caesar" is Relevant for Today"; "Who's the 'You' in 'As You Like It'?" and "The 'Nothing' that Shakespeare Wrote Much Ado About," all in the Winona Post. He had contributed dozens of articles in professional journals, including the Journal of English Linguistics, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, English Today, and Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Dr. Marshall is editor of Language Planning: Focusschrift in honor of Joshua A. Fishman (John Benjamins, 1991).

Enjoying retirement with Ruth Ann Brockert, to whom he has been married for over 50 years, Dr. Marshall and his wife are now settled in Southeastern Minnesota in Winona. He enjoys volunteering at the Great River Shakespeare Festival (serving as vice chair 1914-1917), at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum as a docent, and for Toys for Kids. He also occasionally teaches courses at Winona State University's Senior University. A father of two sons, Michael and Nathan, he formerly served in the US Marine Corps Reserve's First Reconnaissance Battalion and was honorably discharged after active and reserve duty.
