Mr. Jones has 31 years of professional experience, having recently become a district manager of NSW RFS. Over the years, he has become an expert in operational responses, community engagement, and business unit management. On a daily basis, he is responsible for managing all bushfire responses, as well as structural fire events. In addition to his work as a firefighter, Mr. Jones is also a financial expert, and he manages the business and financial operations of NSW RFS Blue Mountains District, as well as handling partnership relationships and community engagement. NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) is a fire service and mitigation organization that provides more than 2,000 volunteer rural fire brigades with a total membership of more than 70,000 to the state of New South Wales.
Mr. Jones is the district manager and fire control officer for the Blue Mountains District. The Blue Mountains is one of the world's most bushfire prone areas that includes the world heritage Blue Mountains National Park, the rugged terrain and extensive urban interface with more than 33,000 homes within 100 meters of the bushland interface. The district responds to all manner of incidents, including bushfires, motor vehicle accidents, search and rescue events, and instigates extensive community engagement and education. Primarily focused on preparedness and response, the operation integrates operations with other sister emergency service agencies and land managers responsible for the national park and surrounding areas.
Looking back, Mr. Jones attributes his success to his experience and commitment to developing resilient fire communities. He became involved based on a need to assist family members protect their rural property during a major bushfire. The majority of members in rural communities are members by need, and Mr. Jones was determined to assist in meeting community needs with bushfire suppression in the most bushfire-prone continent in the world. Mr. Jones' appointment to one of the highest bushfire risk areas in NSW is a testament to his abilities as a firefighter and incident controller.
Mr. Jones received a bachelor's degree in banking, finance and accounting from the University of Canberra in 1988, as well as a diploma of corporate management in 1990. In five years, Mr. Jones plans to have completed strategic development of the district and the development of fire resilient communities.
