David Michael Sever, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Professor emeritus of biological sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University, Dr. Sever made a huge impact at the university during his stay from 2004 to 2015. He served as a professor of vertebrate anatomy and herpetology and department head, and also served as a Major Kenneth Dyson endowed chair. He mentored the thesis research of seven MS graduate students. Dr. Sever is currently Scholar in Residence. Well-known for more than 40 years of work on the secondary sexual characteristics of salamanders, including the anatomy, function, and evolution of their skin glands and cloacal glands, Dr. Sever has conducted studies that have involved ecology and behavior. Responsible for the discovery and naming the species Eurycea junaluska, a salamander restricted to the southern Appalachian Mountains, his most recent work has involved the morphology and phylogeny of sperm storage and other aspects of the urogenital systems of Chondrichthyes, amphibians, and reptiles.

Entering academia in 1974, Dr. Sever was an assistant professor of biology at Saint Mary's College for three years. He then spent another 10 years as an associate professor at the college before becoming a full professor in 1987. From 1980 to 1989, he was also chairman of the biology department, where he oversaw the administration of eight full-time faculty members and two to three full-time teaching staff members. He was also responsible for determining course offerings and registration and counseling of students majoring in department. As a full professor for seven years, Dr. Sever taught freshman biology laboratories for majors, human anatomy, animal diversity, comparative vertebrate morphology, natural history of Great Britain as part of the summer London Program, ecology, electron microscopy, introduction to research, and sociobiology. He also guided two to seven students per year in senior research projects required for graduation. Dr. Sever chaired the faculty affairs committee, grievance committee, faculty compensation committee, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee during this time.

Dr. Sever earned a BS in Zoology cum laude at Ohio University in 1970, an MS in Zoology at Ohio University in 1971, and a PhD in Biology at Tulane University in 1974. Since that time, he has hosted over 140 presentations nationally and internationally and has authored more than 160 papers in refereed journals.

A fellow of the Indiana Academy of Sciences, where Dr. Sever was a longtime chairman of the annual meeting and invitations, and member of the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists, the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, the Herpetologists League, and the Chicago Herpetological Society, Dr. Sever was honored by being named Distinguished Herpetologist of the Year by the Herpetologists' League in 2013. He also received an Excellence in Research Award by Southeastern Louisiana University from 2009 to 2010, a Significant Achievement Award by Ohio University in 1993, and an Outstanding Alumnus Award by Ohio University. Furthermore, he received numerous grants from organizations including the National Science Foundation and other government and private agencies. Dr. Sever was elected President of the Herpetologists' League 2018-2019.

Dr. Sever has been named to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the Midwest. He is married to Marlis Ann Lyon with whom he has had two children.
