/24-7PressRelease/ -- Employees at Debt Shield, a Maryland-based debt settlement company, made their latest group donation to the Humane Society this month.
As a result of the recent economic downturn and record foreclosures, many people can no longer care for their pets and are forced to give them up. This has left shelters across the country overflowing with animals who need new homes. Debt Shield's Talent Development Director Jill Strider said pets can be overlooked during troubling economic times.
"When people are concerned about the effects of a major recession, when they are losing their jobs and their homes, pets are not usually on the forefront of people's minds," said Strider. "This is why it is so important to support causes like the Humane Society."
Established in 1954, the Humane Society is the country's largest animal protection organization. In addition to serving as a refuge for homeless and abandoned pets, the Humane Society also has initiatives aimed at protecting wildlife, farm-raised animals and animals used in research.
"Donations to the Humane Society and similar organizations can help go toward food, supplies and ongoing care for these animals," said Debt Shield Client Account Representative Pam Jones, who submitted the charity to the company's Denim Fund program. "I'm a big animal lover and the dog I've owned for the last nine years came from animal rescue."
The donations were part of the employees' Denim Fund program where employees donate money in exchange for the privilege of wearing blue jeans on Fridays. Each employee enters his or her favorite charity into a random drawing to receive the collected funds.
