/24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Edward Farajzadeh recently attended the Maimonides Symposium, where a lecture was given on new techniques in bone augmentation.
The symposium was held Feb. 15 in the Del Mar area.
Del Mar cosmetic dentist Dr. Farajzadeh often performs bone augmentations at his cosmetic dentistry practice when he is performing tooth extractions or placing dental implants. Sometimes bone must be added to areas where it is lacking, he said.
"We are constantly seeking the best, most up-to-date methods to do this," Farajzadeh said.
Farajzadeh most frequently performs bone augmentation procedures on extraction sites and in the sinus areas of patients.
The augmentation becomes necessary in patients who lost a tooth and allow the area to go untreated for several months prior to
visiting a dentist to address the issue.
"When you lose a tooth, the bone where the tooth once was anchored usually begins to recede fairly quickly," he said. "This process can start within five to six months of the tooth being lost."
The longer the patient goes without treatment, the more severe the problem can become.
Sinus augmentations are required when upper teeth have been lost and there isn't enough bone in the upper jaw area because it has receded close to the sinus area.
"I have to add bone to that area so I will have enough length to put in an implant," Farajzadeh said.
After the bone augmentation procedure is completed, it typically takes four to five months before Farajzadeh can insert the dental implant.
Continuing education opportunities are important to Farajzadeh, who attends between five and 10 educational events every year.
"It's fairly simple," he said of his reasons for attending continuing education events. "If you don't keep up with the latest technology, you won't be able to offer your patients the best services and techniques available. We want to be as up-to-date and as proficient as we can in everything we do."
