Denver Allergy Specialist Helps Patients Brace for High Pollen Counts

An unusually mild winter has given way to an early and severe Colorado allergy season for 2012. Dr. Michael Menachof, a Denver allergy specialist, explains what sufferers can do to combat pollen from cottonwoods and other trees and grasses.

DENVER, CO, May 05, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Following a mild season that some have been calling "the winter that wasn't," many Colorado allergy sufferers are facing what they wish could be "the spring that never was." Dr. Michael Menachof of Advanced Ear, Nose & Throat in Greenwood Village, Colo., says there are things people can do to alleviate the annoying symptoms of seasonal allergies.

"If you think your allergies are worse this year, it's not your imagination," Dr. Menachof says. "Because we had a warm, mild winter, trees are producing more pollen than normal. The March pollen counts for this year were much higher than last year."

Pollen counts for cottonwoods, aspens and other trees continued to be in the moderate-to-high range during mid-April, according to local pollen tracking statistics.

"Particularly on windy days when allergies are bad, try to stay inside and avoid breathing in pollen," Dr. Menachof advises. "If more help is needed, there are a number of prescription and over-the-counter medications and nasal sprays that can help provide temporary relief."

For patients with more severe allergy problems, Dr. Menachof often recommends allergy drops, which help desensitize the immune system and increase the body's tolerance to pollens and other allergy-causing agents.

Since moving to the Denver area in 1991, Dr. Menachof has taken a special interest in Colorado allergy and asthma problems. A board-certified head, neck and facial surgeon, he quickly became aware of the allergy challenges Denver's climate presented and undertook additional intensive training in allergy medicine.

As a result, Advanced Ear, Nose & Throat offers patients a wide range of services. Dr. Menachof diagnoses and treats ear, nose and throat disorders as well as treating allergies and asthma and diagnosing hearing problems, in addition to fitting and servicing hearing aids for Colorado residents.

Dr. Michael R. Menachof is a board-certified otolaryngologist who specializes in allergies, hearing and balance problems and facial plastic surgery. He received his medical degree from University of California San Francisco, graduating in the top 5% of his class, and was awarded placement in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Dr. Menachof remained in the Bay Area to complete 6 years of internship and residency in head and neck surgery and facial plastic surgery. Soon after moving to Denver in 1991, he undertook additional training in allergy medicine and was accepted as a fellow to the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. In 2000, Dr. Menachof was instrumental in founding Advanced Ear, Nose & Throat, Dry Creek Hearing and Advanced ENT Allergy in in Denver.
