-- "Under-eye 'bags' and hollowness can make a woman look older or just plain tired, even if the rest of her face is youthful-looking," says Dr. Michael McCracken. "Over time the tissue that holds the under-eye fat pad in toward the eyeball becomes lax, allowing the fat pad to bulge forward. This creates the appearance of bags under the eyes," he says. "These changes often start to become noticeable around age 35 and can continue to progress with time."
"People were always asking me if I was tired, and their comments really bothered me," says Kim, a Denver area resident who is in her 40's. "That made me very self -conscious about the bags under my eyes, which I began to notice about three years ago. I wanted to correct the problem before it got worse," she says.
"I discussed my concerns with my primary doctor's nurse, and I learned that she had her eyelid surgery done by Dr. McCracken
," says Kim. "My mother had upper eyelid surgery
years ago because her vision was becoming impaired by her sagging eyelids, so I decided to have my upper eyelids done at the same time to prevent any further sagging. I wanted a subtle improvement, not an overdone look, and that's what I got," she says. "Now I look and feel refreshed. And no one asks if I'm tired anymore!"
Upper Blepharoplasty can eliminate hooded, drooping upper eyelids. "Sagging eyelids can make it difficult for women to apply eye makeup," says Dr. McCracken. "The eyes are often the first facial feature to show aging, so women are very interested in maintaining their youthful eyelid contours."
"Upper eyelid surgery takes about 30 minutes and can be done with local anesthesia or in an operating room with I.V. sedation," says Dr. McCracken. "A small incision is made, hidden in the natural eyelid fold which minimizes visible scarring," he says. "There is minimal postoperative discomfort and most patients can return to normal activities within a week. Stitches are removed about a week after the procedure and most patients can resume wearing makeup and contacts at that time."
"Lower eyelid surgery can help reduce the signs of aging beneath the eyes," says Dr. McCracken. "During lower eyelid surgery I make a small incision, hidden either in the skin below the eyelashes or the inside of the eyelid. Through either approach, eyelid fat can be removed or repositioned to restore youthful contours," says Dr. McCracken. "If extra skin needs to be excised this can be done through an incision below the eyelid." View before and after photos here
