Denver Plastic Surgeon Combines Breast Augmentation and Lift for Better Results

Incorporating a breast lift at the same time as breast implants can offer an improved outcome without increased risk of complications.

Since the goal is to deliver beautiful, natural results, it's important to be flexible in meeting that need.

DENVER, CO, October 17, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Combining breast augmentation with breast lift surgery into a single procedure does not increase complications rates and may actually improve end results, according to a recent report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Dr. Frank Campanile (http://www.campanileplasticsurgery.com), an ASPS member and prominent Denver plastic surgeon, agrees that combining surgeries can deliver a more positive outcome than either procedure alone.

"Many patients don't realize that implants only add volume," says Dr. Campanile, a breast augmentation specialist in Denver. "An implant isn't going to offer the higher placement that most women imagine when they think about breast augmentation. A breast lift does offer that benefit, so it makes good sense to combine them."

The quoted research looked at 430 breast lifts performed over a four-year period. In 332 of those cases, breast implants were placed during the same surgery. The surgery revision rate for women who chose simultaneous surgeries was 13 percent; for women who underwent only breast lift surgery, the revision rate was 10 percent. Other complications were implant-related, and were not significantly higher than in surgeries where implants were used without a breast lift.

About one-third of study participants were receiving the procedure as a revision following a less desirable outcome of a previous surgery. Complications were seen more often in these participants compared to women undergoing either surgery for the first time.

"Since the goal is to deliver beautiful, natural results, it's important to be flexible in meeting that need," explains Dr. Campanile, who offers both breast lifts and implants at his Denver plastic surgery practice. "For some women, this means incorporating a breast lift along with implants."

Both breast lifts and breast augmentation are among the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States today. Although combining surgeries can create a greater technical challenge for surgeons, there are advantages to doing so.

When surgeries are performed simultaneously, the patient enjoys a lower anesthesia risk level and only one recovery period. Most patients prefer to have results finalized in one appointment rather than having a waiting period between surgeries. Combining surgeries also helps to alleviate the additional cost that two procedures would necessitate. With the study evidence now showing that combining procedures does not cause any greater health risks to the patient, more surgeons may now begin endorsing the combination approach.

"Patient safety is definitely the top priority," agrees Dr. Campanile, whose practice offers a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatments for patients. "If the risk isn't greater to the patient, and we can better reach my patients' appearance goals by combining breast augmentation with a lift, then that's the approach I recommend."
