SANTA CRUZ, CA, October 13, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The number of developers actively developing in a Cloud environment reached 5.4 million in 2016, according to Evans Data Corp's Global Development Population and Demographics Study, the de facto standard in developer population estimates. It also found that the number of developers developing in a Cloud environment has increased by 375% since Evans began measuring developer participation in mobile development in 2009, when just slightly more than 1.2M developers were using the Cloud as their development platform.

The emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions show the fastest growth. APAC today has more developers in the Cloud with 1.8M than any other region and has an additional 2.2M planning to develop in a Cloud computing environment within six months - a difference of 120%. But Latin America, which currently has the smallest population of developers in the Cloud projects the largest change six months out.

Of the total 21M developers worldwide, Cloud adoption as a development environment is slightly outpacing deployments. The study, which is now in its 20th edition, estimates not only current software developer populations across four major regions and forty different countries, but also overlays global primary research onto the population numbers to show numbers of developers forecast to adopt technologies now and in the future.

"Developers are embracing Cloud development platforms not only because of the cost factor but also the ease of scaling," said Janel Garvin CEO of Evans Data. "But the availability of tools that have become prevalent across Cloud platforms is certainly also a driving factor."

For the general developer population, estimates and projections for growth to 2020 show APAC is currently the largest population region and is growing faster than other regions.
