CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, December 09, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Johann Radcliffe of Dirty Boots and Darron Raw of Swazi Trails recently circumnavigated Swaziland in twelve days with only their feet and trusty mountain bikes as transport.
So, here are the stats:
- Who? Johann and Darron.
- Where? Around the 550km border of Swaziland.
- What? A mission to complete a circumnavigation of Swaziland in 12 days or less and to experience hassle-free Africa at its best.
- Why? Mainly because it sounded like a good idea at the time and because no one had done it before (at least not to their knowledge). Furthermore, certain things need to be done in order to prove to yourself that you are not over the proverbial hill just yet.
So, after much preparation and celebratory carbo-loading, off they went on 11th August 2009, with Karen Vickers as backup crew member (driving the 4x4 and taking care of the heavier equipment and supplies until Johann and Darron felt strong enough to do so themselves). Their
Swaziland adventure holiday commenced at Ngwenya/Oshoek border post and the first day passed in a flurry of excitement over the impressive Makwane Peak, an awe-inspiring sunset over Shiya Peak and a lip-smacking dinner of butter chicken and basmati rice, followed by leftover birthday cake.
Johann's pesky internal clock woke the pair up at four o'clock the following morning and as they settled in to have a first cup of reviving coffee they watched as local children filed by on their daily 10km hike to school. They sat around discussing their amazing privilege for a while longer, had some oats and set off through Usutu SAPPI forest, encountering along the way a crew of foresters, a hunting party tracking duiker with dogs and a friendly local girl who accompanied them for the last leg of this day's hike. What followed was food, bed and dreamless sleep after a whopping 36.5km that was covered at a speed of approximately 4.6km/h.
Sounds interesting right? We bet you would like to know more about how the rest of the trip played out. Luckily Darron is a superb writer who kept track of their progress in a painstaking, detailed manner. Friends, family and interested members of the public followed their progress on

Southern African adventure holidays are truly the stuff that dreams are made of and something that each and every individual should enjoy at least once in the brief time they have to explore this amazing planet of ours. While you may not feel up to walking around a whole country (albeit a small one), there are many other adventure options you can choose from. You could venture into the deep to get up close and personal with some of the ocean's most fearsome predators, abseil down sheer cliff faces, trek across mountain ranges, dive out of aeroplanes, cycle through valleys, battle your way through white water rapids or view the African continent from the back of a majestic elephant - to name but a few.
Your adventure holiday wish is quite literally our demand. Contact a friendly Dirty Boots representative today if you wish to know more about South Africa adventure holidays.
