The research conducted by the
money-saving website found that a quite astonishing 27.25% people in the UK don't have a clue how much money their loved one earns. The poll also showed that double the amount of women than men stash money away for a rainy day in a personal bank account, with 8% versus 4%.
On top of this startling discovery, the latest DiscountVouchers.co.uk poll also revealed that a huge 43% of women do not tell the truth to their partner about their clothing spend. 17% of men admitted to lying about what they pay for clothing too, with the survey showing that people felt guilt was the primary reason for this duplicity.
40% of respondents told the
voucher codes site that they often open and read their partner's bank statements, while a further 10% stated that they do not even bother to open financial correspondence at all.
Psychologist Dr Penny Goldsbrough says: "It is quite common among consumers to lie about personal finances, and it is driven by low self-esteem and also a fear of the unknown. There is also this intrinsic lack of trust in a partner which leads to reading financial correspondence - this lack of trust is also present in people who keep secret bank accounts."
Dr Goldsbrough went on: "Many women adopt these financial secrecy habits from their mothers. There is definitely a human trait which is to enjoy spending money, yet by contrast we also feel guilt about that very habit."
