According to a Kaiser Foundation / Harvard School of Public Health Study, 33% of cancer patients have trouble paying their medical bills while 43% skip treatment or do not fill prescriptions due to cost. One out of five patients with health insurance will use all or most of their savings during the course of treatment. The outlook for uninsured and underinsured patients is much grimmer.
The average family budget doesn't begin to cover the cost of breast cancer. Even in best case scenarios, insured women with a 10 or 20% co pay can expect to pay out expenses on average $10,000 to $15,000. In worse case scenarios, women who are uninsured or underinsured can become financially ruined to fight their disease. Many families struggle to cover basic living expenses such as mortgages, utilities and food while at the same time must endure the many changes it brings to their lives.
