SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, July 05, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Platt confesses to spending ten years writing her book.
"It's a labour of love, I have worked on it for the past ten years. I find the common plant names very interesting. At last gardeners can see if the same common name is used in other areas of the world or not." Platt told us.
The book was inspired by a desire to show that common names are not universal. One plant can have many common names, often specific to a given area. Common plant names have been taken from many countries around the world including the U.K., North America and Canada; Australia; Europe and South Africa. There are even a few Maori and Arabic plant names.
Since the plant names are cross-referenced, the book is useful to gardeners who only know common plant names, they will be able to see the corresponding correct botanical name of the plant. Gardeners that only know the botanical names can see all the common names related to that plant. It is entirely searchable, so you can enter a name you know and look it up.
Books on the subject often contain no more than 6,000 names, often a lot less. Platt includes 40,000.
"I wanted the book to be comprehensive," she said "It's an essential part of my work."
