Dr. Baird has received over $39 million dollars in research funding, and his findings are documented in over 178 peer reviewed publications and a major text book co-authored with Dimitris I. Collins.

Born in Tecumseh, Michigan, Dr. Baird studied at Michigan State University to earn Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He received a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1974 and joined Virginia Tech in 1978. Dr. Baird is internationally renowned for his knowledge of chemical engineering, polymer processing, composites processing, polymer fluid mechanics, heat transfers, fluid mechanics, and numerical methods. Prior to his current position, Dr. Baird held the Harry C. Wyatt Professorship of Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Baird has been a celebrated instructor and researcher at Virginia Tech, notably receiving the 1991 Alumni Research Award, a 2002 Dean's Award for Excellence in Research, and the 1998 Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is the recipient of the Jack Breslin Award from Michigan State University as well as the 2002 International Award for Education, the 2003 Research Award and the 2009 International Award all from the Society of Plastics Engineers. Dr. Baird has been a mentor to generations of PhD students, Master's degree students, and a slew of researchers and scientists.

In addition, Dr. Baird maintains membership with the Society of Rheology, the American Institute Chemical Engineering, the Society of Plastic Engineering, the Polymer Processing Society, and the American Chemical Society. In 2015, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers named Dr. Baird a fellow of the institute. He is a member of the Virginia Tech Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute.

For achievements in chemical engineering and tireless dedication to scientific education, Dr. Baird was selected for inclusion in the 2012 volume of Who's Who in America. He enjoys travel, history, and exercise, particularly walking and hiking.
