Mr. Conklin is a retired pharmaceutical executive who served for 39 years with the Schering-Plough pharmaceutical firm based in Kenilworth, New Jersey, now a part of Merck and Company. Schering-Plough was the producer of drugs such as Claritin, Vytorin, and Temodar, as well as the foot care brand Dr. Scholl's and the skin care line Coppertone. Mr. Conklin worked with Schering-Plough's international marketing and operations for much of his career, residing in Europe and South America.
Born in Bound Brook, New Jersey, to Walter Ransford and Dorothy Ann Conklin, Mr. Conklin attended Williams College to earn a BA in 1958 and went on to Rutgers University to earn an MBA in 1961. He attended the graduate program for management development at Harvard University in 1970. In 1972, the company became independent from its German parent and was renamed Schering-Plough. It still retained a significant interest in Europe, and in 1975, Mr. Conklin was assigned director of marketing in the Europe division and posted to Lucerne, Switzerland.
Two years later, Mr. Conklin returned to Kenilworth in 1977 as vice president of international marketing, and in 1980, he was assigned regional director and president of the Latin American division based in Miami, Florida. In 1984, he became president of the company's worldwide pharmaceutical operations, and in 1996 he was appointed president of consumer healthcare at Schering-Plough before retiring in 1998.
For his achievements in the pharmaceutical industry, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and the 1992 to 1993 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Industry. Mr. Conklin married in 1960 during his student days to Louise Sealey and had two children, Elizabeth and Edward. Louise passed away in 2005. He remarried Elizabeth Heckman in 2009.
He is a member of The Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, and the Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, New Jersey.
