/24-7PressRelease/ -- Don't Kick the Police Officer Who Pulls You Over for a Traffic Violation
Bizarre situations with traffic stops have been in the Pennsylvania news lately. Early in January, a woman driver was stopped by a state trooper for a traffic violation. After pulling over, she got out of the car and urinated on the ground in front of the trooper. When he arrested her for indecent exposure, she screamed profanities and repeatedly kicked him as he put her in the back of his squad car.
Later that same month, another woman got out of her car topless. She removed her pants and wore them on her head and also took off her shoes -- throwing them at passing cars. A passerby asked if she was okay and she slapped him. She scuffled with the police who showed up and was ultimately taken in for a mental examination.
Proper Behavior During a Traffic Stop
There are obvious things one must avoid when pulled over for a traffic violation. Punching, biting, yelling and bribing the officer with a homemade grilled cheese sandwich (it really happened) are all things one should not do. However, there are a few pointers to keep in mind if you see those flashing lights in your rearview mirror:
-Use your turn signal and drive calmly to a safe place on the side of the road
-Do not make any sudden movements as it may appear that you are hiding something or reaching for a weapon
-Get your license and insurance information out only when instructed to do so
-Turn off your ignition and put your hands on the steering wheel
-Stay calm and be polite -- getting angry or starting an argument will only make things worse
-Never admit to anything
Keep in mind that the person who pulled you over is only doing his or her job. If you can make some small talk and keep your tone light, the whole situation may turn out a lot better for you.
Unfortunately, many traffic stops result in a ticket or arrest, even for those on their best behavior during the stop. In these situations, you need the assistance of a lawyer who knows how to defend people charged with crimes such as DUI or other traffic violations. Get advice from an attorney experienced with protecting your driving privileges.
