/24-7PressRelease/ - NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, August 11, 2007 - If you found out after the April 15 tax deadline and did not file to request the Telephone Excise Tax Refund on your 2006 tax returns, it's not too late. Taxpayers still have the opportunity to request this unique refund by filing an amended return using Form 1040X, according to a recent announcement by the IRS.

"The Telephone Excise Tax was first implemented in 1898 when telephones were considered a luxury. The tax has come and gone several times, but due to a growing threat of litigation, the IRS has removed it once again," said Sam Trotter, a Licensed Taxpayer Representative for JK Harris.

"Most taxpayers are owed the Telephone Excise Tax Refund; it is available to almost any person or business that paid a phone bill in the last three years," Trotter added. "From our experience most of our clients have received this particular refund."

According to the IRS, taxpayers who have paid long distance charges on a landline, cell phone, Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) or bundled service that was billed between the period of February 28, 2003 and August 1, 2006 qualify for the refund.

If they are eligible to receive the refund, taxpayers can choose one of two options: they may request the actual amount of federal excise tax paid based upon phone bills for the time period, or they may request the standard refund, which ranges from $30 to $60 based upon the number of exemptions claimed on the individual tax return.

"For the most part, the only inquiries we've had about the refund have been from clients who want a further understanding of it," Trotter said.

The IRS says taxpayers should be take note that Form 1040X must be filed on paper. Taxpayers can find form 1040X online at http://www.irs.org or by calling and ordering it at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). Enter the amount of your refund on line 15. For more information on this refund, visit the IRS online at http://www.IRS.gov.
