Dr. Atlee Cunningham Recognized for Excellence in the Field of Aeronautical Engineering

Dr. Cunningham is the recipient of the NASA Certificate of Recognition and the Memorial Research Award from the Texas A&M Foundation

FORT WORTH, TX, February 11, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Atlee Cunningham has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

He embarked on his career path after earning both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas in 1961 and 1963 and began his PhD program. After a two-year stint with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Cunningham joined General Dynamics in 1965 as a Senior Engineer and went on to complete his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1966. Over the course of his career, Dr. Cunningham has held several positions in the engineering field, including research scientist with the Defense Research Laboratory in Austin, Texas, and engineering staff specialist with General Dynamics Corp., Lockheed Corp., and Lockheed Martin. He now serves as a senior principal research engineer and Senior LM fellow with Lockheed Martin, a position he has held since 2002.

During his career, he has developed new methods for predicting high angle of attack aerodynamics in subsonic and supersonic flows, steady and unsteady force testing techniques for aerodynamic investigations using water tunnels, and new concepts and methods for nonlinear aeroelasticity. Through his innovations in subsonic, transonic and supersonic steady and oscillatory aerodynamics and aeroelastic methods, Dr. Cunningham has provided major contributions to aeroelastic and aerodynamic developments and improvements for General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin F-111, F-16, F-22, F-35 and various C-130's aircraft. Additionally, he has pioneered new technology developments for which he holds two patents, for unsteady separated flows and buffeting on aircraft maneuvering at high angle of attack involving the support of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, NASA, the National Aerospace Laboratory (Netherlands), Lockheed Martin, and the University of Texas.

An Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Dr. Cunningham has been a visiting industrial professor with Southern Methodist University, visiting associate professor in the aeronautical engineering department of the University of Texas, and lecturer of aeroelasticity at National Cheng Kung University and the University of Texas. He has been a member of technology teams with international technology organizations, and served as a consultant for NASA, the U.S. Air Force and Navy, and the University of Texas.

Dr. Cunningham has contributed to several professional journals, symposia and books with over 50 technical papers, presentations and reports. He was the recipient of the NASA Certificate of Recognition in 1980, the Achievement Award from General Dynamics in 1980, 1983, and 1989, and the Memorial Research Award from the Texas A&M Foundation. He was also featured in Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
