Dr. David Gee Celebrated by Marquis Who's Who for 50 Years of Valuable Contributions to the Field of Geology

Dr. Gee is thriving in his role with Orogen Dynamics

UPPSALA, SWEDEN, January 30, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. David G. Gee was included in Marquis Who's Who in 2011. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With five decades of experience in academia, partly within government agencies, Dr. Gee is uniquely positioned to guide a variety of tasks concerning Orogen (Mountain Belt) Dynamics, where he has been a professor since 1986 (emeritus since 2004). Prior to obtaining his first professional role, he earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in Svalbard Tectonics, all from Cambridge University. He began his career with the Norwegian Polar Institute 1964-65 and then moved to the Geological Survey in Sweden, where he remained for 20 years before transferring to a Swedish Research Council position at Lund University and establishing the Orogen Dynamics program. In 1994, he moved his research to Uppsala University, where he was dean of Earth Sciences from 1996-2002. During his 50 years in the field of geology, he has worked a lot in the Scandian mountains of Sweden and Norway and also in the high Arctic from Svalbard to northernmost Siberia and Severnaya Zemlya. He has been chairman of the Swedish Polar Research Committee, senior advisor for the UN International Year of Planet Earth (2007-2009) and, most recently, co-leader of an International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project, Collisional Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides (COSC).

A member of Academia Europaea, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund, and various geological societies of North America, Norway, Sweden and London (UK), Dr. Gee has achieved much throughout his career, including the Swedish Geological Survey discovery of the Myrviken alum shale U,V,Mo,Ni deposit in Jämtland, Sweden. Dr. Gee has played a leading role in many projects concerning Caledonian Orogeny and was also chairman of EUROPROBE, a major European Science Foundation program uniting lithosphere science in Eastern and Western Europe between 1988 and 2006. As president of the European Union of Geosciences, he promoted integration with the European Geophysical Society to form the European Geosciences Union in 2004. Subsequently, as vice-president of the 33rd International Geological Congress in Oslo in 2008, he chaired the Science program committee. He has contributed his knowledge of geoscience in many articles in professional journals and also as co-editor of special volumes about the Scandinavian Caledonides, Uralides, Timanides, European Lithosphere Dynamics and Nordic Geoscience.

In light of his achievements, Dr. Gee has earned many accolades, including the Stephan Mueller Medal from the European Geosciences Union in 2007 and, in Sweden, Geologist of the Year in 2008. He was celebrated with an honorary volume of GFF in 1998 and has also been included in two volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. In the coming years, Dr. Gee hopes to continue his international collaboration with colleagues in Europe, China, India, Russia and USA, contributing to an understanding of mountain belt dynamics world-wide. .
