Dr. Emanuel Mickel Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Research and Graduate Teaching

With a specific focus on French literature of the Middle Ages and the Nineteenth Centry



    BLOOMINGTON, IN, April 14, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Emanuel Mickel has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Now retired, Dr. Mickel celebrates a career as an educator that spanned more than five decades. With a specific focus on the French language, he excelled at teaching graduate and advanced undergraduate students in the analysis of French literature and history. He began his career with the University of Nebraska as an assistant professor and was promoted after two years to the rank of associate professor. Thereafter, he joined the team at Indiana University, where he remained for the duration of his career. During his tenure, Dr. Mickel held many positions, including associate dean of the graduate school, founder and director of the Medieval Studies Institute, and chairman of the Department of French and Italian. Noteworthy achievements during his tenure include a National Endowment of the Humanities grant to form a research project with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. Later he was awarded a year long grant from the Lilly Foundation in Indianapolis to conduct research on the Old French Epic. Dr. Mickel also served as an evaluator for the ACLS Fellowship and was a visiting scholar at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge.

Dr. Mickel shared his work and insights on a larger scale by authoring a number of scholarly books: The Artifical Paradises in French Literature 1969, Marie de France 1974, Eugene Fromentin 1982, Ganelon, Treason and the Chanson de Roland 1989, Jules Vernes Complete Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea 1992 and the Enfances Godefroi and Retour de Cornumarant 1999. He also was the co-editor of the Old French Crusade Cycle, a ten-volume project published by the University of Alabama Press between 1977 and 2003. Dr. Mickel has published more than eighty scholarly articles in major European and North American Journals and he has lectured widely in England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and North America.

Dr. Mickel is a graduate of Louisiana State University where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. He later attended the University of North Carolina, earning a Master of Arts in 1961 and a Ph.D. in 1965 after serving as an officer in the United States military from 1961 to 1963. As he looks to the future, Dr. Mickel intends to work on select projects while enjoying his retirement.
