Supported by nearly five decades of practiced industry experience, Dr. Mizejewski parlays his extensive knowledge into his role as assistant director of the Fetal Defects Marker Laboratory, which is part of the New York State Health Department; he has served in this role since 1999. Before entering the field in a professional capacity, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Duquesne University and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Maryland. While pursuing postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan, he began working at the institution as a research associate for the internal medicine department, where he served from 1968 to 1970. The next year, Dr. Mizejewski became an instructor and research physiologist for the university's VA hospital.
Upon relocating to South Carolina, Dr. Mizejewski began working as an assistant professor in the biology department of the University of South Carolina, where he remained for three years. In the years since, he has held positions in New York State, becoming a research scientist, director of the oncofetal antigen laboratory, and assistant director of the hypothyroid newborn screening laboratory of the New York State Health Department. In addition to his work with the Fetal Defects Marker Laboratory, he also works as a senior research scientist for Wadsworth Center Laboratories, where he has remained since 1974.
In addition to many other roles in the field, Dr. Mizejewski has affiliated himself with Albany Medical College, the State University of New York at Albany, the National Kidney Foundation and the Alzheimer's Association. In order to remain current with changes in the field, he aligns himself with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Zoologists, the International Society of Oncodevelopmental Biology & Medicine, and the American Federation of Clinical Research. A stellar example of skill in his field, he was granted two anti-cancer drug patents, named a research fellow with the National Science Foundation, and included in Who's Who in America, in the 57th and 58th editions, and in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East. Dr. Mizejewski recently received a 40 Year Government Employee Service award for his tenure at the Biggs Laboratory of the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Health Department.
