/24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr SPS Grewal, veteran researcher & CEO, Grewal Eye Institute (GEI), region's leading premium Eye Care Chain, has returned to Chandigarh after participating in the highly anticipated 2008 Joint Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, USA. Dr. SPS Grewal presented four original Research Projects, two each in Paper Presentation & Poster Presentation, at the four-day 2008 Joint Meet, the largest ophthalmic gathering in the world. Amongst thousands of Research Projects submitted by international researchers from all over the globe, less than 100, including two by GEI, were chosen for Paper Presentation at the prestigious platform.
Dr Grewal presented two research papers, 'Posterior Corneal Elevation Changes Following LASIK With Flap Creation by Femtosecond Laser, Mechanical Keratome, and 20% Alcohol in LASEK' and 'Stability of Corneal Topography 1 Year After Corneal Collagen Crosslinking With Riboflavin and Ultraviolet Light in Keratoconus Eyes', at the AAO-SOE Joint Meet.
The LASIK procedure for removal of glasses consists of two steps. The first Step is the creation of a flap in the eye. The second step is using LASER on the exposed eye underneath the Flap to correct vision. In the first step, Flap can be created using three different techniques; using the Femtosecond Laser (called the Intralase Method), using the mechanical blade Keratome and the Epi-LASIK or LASEK method. The first research paper by GEI presented the comparative study on the effects on the cornea of the eye, after creation of Flap, via the three different techniques, while undergoing LASIK.
Keratoconus is a disorder of the eye in which the cornea thins and changes to a conical shape causing moderate to severe blurriness of vision. The revolutionary 'Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin' (C3R) Treatment is the only known method to permanently halt the progression of the dreaded Keratoconus disease. GEI became the first institute in the Indian Sub-Continent to offer the C3R treatment to the masses in September 2006. The second research paper by GEI presented the successful results of the C3R method, one year after treatment for progressive Keratoconus.
The two Posters presented by Dr Grewal at the Joint Meet were 'Age-Related Thinning of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Evaluated Using Spectral Domain OCT in Normal Eyes' and 'Comparative Scores of Ophthalmology Residents and Consultants for Capsulorrhexis and Phacoemulsification on the EYESi Surgical Simulator'.
Glaucoma is an eye disease in which damage to the nerve located in the back of the retina, the optic nerve, results in loss of eyesight. There is some regular loss to the nerve due to aging, independent of the Glaucoma disease. The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a diagnostic machine used for Glaucoma assessment. The first poster presented by GEI is a study done via the OCT to differentiate between losses caused by Glaucoma and aging. The study will help eye doctors identify the cases in which the damage to the optic nerve is due to Glaucoma and others in which it is purely age-related. This will assist ophthalmologist in making earlier and more precise diagnosis of Glaucoma. The second poster presented by GEI is a study on the merits of using specialized Virtual Reality Simulators, which allow eye doctors to practice surgery in the virtual computer world, for training purposes.

The group, based at San Francisco, California, boasts of a membership of more than 90 percent of practicing ophthalmologists in the United States and an international membership of more than 7000, making it the largest American association in its field.
The European Society of Ophthalmology or the Societas Ophthalmologica Europća (SOE), is the aggregation of representatives from 37 National Ophthalmological Societies in Europe. The SOE was created in 1956 to provide a collective platform to eye doctor from Europe.
