Dr. Jameel Ahmad Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Ahmad is a celebrated professor of civil engineering at New York's Cooper Union University, where he serves as chairman of the department and director of the Institute for Urban Security, as well as the Center for Urban Infrastructure. He is the holder of numerous patents of civil engineering designs, including structural materials for streets and energy infrastructure for use in slow-moving water. Dr. Ahmad came to the U.S. in 1962, and since then has accrued a monumental listing of accolades from his peers, making him a vital asset for building excellence into American cities.

An alumnus of the Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan, Dr. Ahmad is the son of Naseer and Iftikhar Bakhsh. He landed on American soil to study at the University of Hawaii as part of a fellowship with the East-West Center, where he earned a Master of Science in 1964. One year later, he transitioned to a fellowship with the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a PhD in 1967. Dr. Ahmad briefly joined Widener University in nearby Chester, Penn. as an assistant professor before being welcomed by Cooper Union in 1968. He received the 1971 Rossi Prize for Research and was appointed associate professor that year. He taught for eight years and was named professor of civil engineering in 1979, becoming chairman in the department one year later. In 1983, Dr. Ahmad became director of the Cooper Union Research Foundation, where he served until 2007. He has also served as a senior adviser for the Verdant Power L.L.C. in Arlington, Va. since 2003.

In 2005 Dr. Ahmad was appointed to his current positions as director of two research institutes in Cooper Union on the merits of his innovations in civil engineering. He holds patents on fleximech reinforcement systems, an asphalt reinforcement system, a blast-mitigating structure system for protection of city residents, a wire-mesh reinforcement system to enhance the blast resisting properties of concrete, and a kinetic hydropower system for generating electricity from slow-moving waters. Dr. Ahmad has also conducted research with the Research Institute for the Study of Man, based in New York, and belongs to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Engineering Education, the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Structural Engineering Institute, and the American Society of Civil Engineers, which presented him with a 1985 Outstanding Service Award. He is a recipient of the 1993 Abdus Salam Medal for distinguished research in engineering sciences by the Pakistan League of America, for which he has served as a director of the board. Dr. Ahmad's excellence in engineering was recognized by membership in the honor societies Chi Epsilon and Phi Kappa Phi. He was also commended with a 2007 Presidential Citation for 25 Years of Service by the Cooper Union Research Foundation. Dr. Ahmad is a community advocate, and has served with the Vilmanor Community Association and the West Side Community Association in New York.

For innovations in civil engineering, Dr. Ahmad was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World, as well as three volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business. He married Rosalba Quiroz in March 1983 and had two children, Monica and Sidney.
