Dr. John Robert Eastman Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

As a teacher and historian of 49 years, Dr. Eastman has spent his life passing on the gift of knowledge in the Maryland and Virginia areas, educating students in the practical skill of German, as well as the reflections of history. Dr. Eastman's expertise is in European history, in particular the modern and medieval periods. Recently, he submitted an article to the prestigious Augustiniana periodical, titled "Giles of Rome and Peter of Auvergne in the Later 1290s: The Papacy of Celestine V, Abdication, and Canon Law."

Dr. Eastman was born in San Diego to John Henry and Theresa Eastman. He received the 1963 William John Bennett Memorial Scholarship from Annapolis High School, which helped him pursue higher education. Dr. Eastman traveled to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to earn a BA in history, with a minor in German, in 1968, and taught at Southern High School in Harwood, Md., for one year. He kept going east, to the Experiment in International Living in Wurzburg, Germany and completed work at the Goethe Institute at Grafath, Germany in 1969. Dr. Eastman served as a restoration technician at the Blersch-Lenz Company in Munich until 1975 before moving back to Wurzburg and serving as a bilingual tourist guide at the Arbeitsamt. He was also an English instructor at the Dolmetscher Institute while attending Julius-Maximilians-Universitat, earning a PhD in medieval history, with a minor in art history and modern European history, in 1985.

From 1992 to 1997, Dr. Eastman returned to Maryland and worked as a summer and substitute teacher for high schools in the area. He was certified with a postgraduate professional license from prekindergarten to 12th grade in the subjects of German, Latin and history in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1997, Dr. Eastman accepted a role at the Peninsula Catholic High School as a teacher, where he served until 2001. He acted briefly as an assistant professor of German at Old Dominion University before teaching at the Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg, Va., for three years.

In 2005, Dr. Eastman became adjunct faculty in the history department of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, and serves as a tutor in the area. Over the course of a stellar education career, Dr. Eastman has brought home many awards, including the Global Award, as well as the Educator of the Year Award and the Chapter Award from the Sterling Registry. He has written many articles in professional journals, and is the author of "Papal Abdication in Later Medieval Thought," the editor of "Aegidius Romanus, De Renunciatione Pape," as well as contributor to "International Medieval Bibliography." Dr. Eastman is affiliated with the American Historical Association, the Southeastern Medieval Association, the Capital Area Independent Scholars, the American Philological Association, the American Catholic History Association, and the American Association of Teachers of German. For a lifetime devoted to historical education, Dr. Eastman was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. He enjoys meditation, walking, college football games, genealogy, and has a passing interest in Aikido.
