Prior to his involvement in this role, he was a third and second on-board engineer officer for merchant marines with the Marine Overseas Corp, and an engineer with the research and development center of Hyundai Motors Group. Over the years, Dr. Baek has honed his expertise regarding emissions and the performance of light-duty diesel vehicles, as well as new and advanced technologies for exhaust reduction systems, and the effects of biodiesel fuel on emissions and performance of the diesel engine.
An alumnus of Korea Maritime & Ocean University, the University of South Alabama, and Texas A&M University, Dr. Baek holds a Bachelor of Science in maritime engineering, as well as a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. In order to remain current with developments in his field, he affiliates himself with the Society of Automotive Engineering, the Korea Society of Automotive Engineering, and the Society of Oceanic Painting and Art.
Throughout his lengthy career, Dr. Baek has achieved many awards for his work in the field. In 2006, he earned the Excellence Award in DFSS Themes from Hyundai Motors Group. Four years later, he won first place for a paper at the 16th Asia-Pacific Automotive Conference. More recently, in 2011, Dr. Baek won a Hyundai Hero Award from Hyundai Motors. Additionally, he has been awarded a number of patents for a low-pressure EGR system, an exhaust device for a diesel vehicle, and an apparatus for urea supply in reduction of NOx emissions in diesel engines.
