TOWNSVILLE, AUSTRALIA, October 09, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Kirsten Heimann, Associate Professor, Researcher and Lecturer for the College of Marine and Environmental Sciences at James Cook University, has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Phycology. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only small selections of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.

With almost three decades in the field of phycology, Dr. Heimann is well-versed in molecular biology and biochemistry as it relates to microalgae, marine microalgal blooms, bioluminescence and benthic microalgal community analyses. Since becoming an Associate Professor at James Cook University seven years ago, she has been in charge of supervising eight Ph.D. students, leading multimillion dollar research in the areas of waste gas remediation, methane and CO2, phytoplantkon, and using the biomass to generate renewable bioproducts, as well as working and conducting research in the areas of microalgal isolation and culture establishment, large scale microalgal biomass production, microalgal physiology, cell biology and ecotoxicology.

Attributing her success to having perseverance in the face of adversity, her flexibility and being critical with herself, as well as being inspired by her students, Dr. Heimann has received numerous peer-review awards for her research and has been published in highly regarded journals such as Nature. At James Cook University, she initiated and built the AMCRC microalgal carbon capture project and led the methane bioremediation project. She had also been instrumental in securing competitive research funding of more than $16 million for research into microalgal and microbial greenhouse waste gas remediation research and co-product development. Dr. Heimann would like to continue in her career by making inroads into renewable products, especially in the re-use of waste products.

Dr. Heimann received a Ph.D. in phycology with a minor in microbiology from the Universität zu Köln in 1991 and completed coursework in cell biology at the University of Münster in 1986. She is a member of the American Phycology Society, the Australia New Zealand Society for Phycology and Aquatic Botany, the American Chemical Society, and is the founder and director of the North Queensland Algal Identification/Culturing Facility at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia. Additionally, she is associated with Bioenergy Australia, and the European Algal Biomass Association.
The recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Heimann earned a North Queensland Coorporate Business Women Award in 2012, as well as placed runner up in the James Cook University Trail Blazer Competition. She has also received a Tropical Zone Innovation Award, and a Women in Technology Regional Development Award in 2011. Further, she earned a Telstra Queensland Business Women Nokia Innovation Award in 2010 and a Smart Women-Smart State Award for Women in Industry, Business and Research Science in 2008. In 2007, Dr. Heimann received a Carrick Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and a JCU Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

The College of Marine and Environmental Sciences at James Cook University conducts research in aquaculture, bio-technology, environmental bio-tech, remediation of waste gasses and wastewaters using microorganisms, and more.
