A member of the Swedish National Board of Science, Drug Discovery and Development Platform, Dr. Sakariassen is regarded as an expert in many areas of medical biology. He is the founder of KellSa s.a.s., a medical research consultation firm in Biella, Italy, and KellSa Diagnostics GmbH, a diagnostic research firm in Basel, Switzerland, and he held executive positions with prominent pharmacology organizations, including Serono International, Pharmacia Corp. and Nycomed Imaging. Passionate about his work, Dr. Sakariassen has also excelled in academia as a professor of physiology and a research scientist at the University of Oslo, as well as supervisor of M.Sc. students, Ph.D. fellows and as mentor of visiting research scientists from universities in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Sweden and the Netherlands. Further, he was a consultant for the Media Resource Service of the Ciba Foundation and editorial assistant for The Biochemical Journal and the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Dr. Sakariassen has contributed many articles, and additionally, he has written chapters for scientific research textbooks.
Dr. Sakariassen is a patent-holder as a result of the research he has performed over the last 30 years. In recognition of professional excellence, he was the recipient of the Theodor Naegli Prize, Basel, Switzerland, the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress Award, the OWREN Lecture Prize, Oslo, Norway, the Odd Fellow Prize, Oslo, Norway, Prix Amalthee, Paris, France, and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis / Scientific Standardization Committee Award. Named a fellow of the American Heart Association, Dr. Sakariassen was also selected for inclusion in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
To prepare for a career in the scientific research field, Dr. Sakariassen attended the University of Tromso, where he achieved a Master of Science in cell biology in 1979. Later, he earned a Ph.D. in medical biology from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, which lead him to postdoctoral endeavors with the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, and F. Hoffmann-LaRoche Ltd, Basel, Switzerland. Today, Dr. Sakariassen remains at the head of his field through his involvement with a number of professional organizations. He is a member of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and a member of the editorial board of Future Science Open Access.
