Dr. Lionel Vernon Baldwin Recognized for Contributions to Engineering & Education

A man of many accomplishments, Dr. Baldwin considers one of his greatest achievements to be patenting an apparatus for increasing ion engine beam density.

    FORT COLLINS, CO, December 09, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Lionel Vernon Baldwin has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Widely regarded for his knowledge and skill in academic administration, Dr. Baldwin served National Technological University for more than a decade prior to his retirement in 2000. He initially created the university in 1984 after leaving his role as the dean and professor of the college of engineering at Colorado State University. After he retired from NTU, he served as a founding consultant, then director and treasurer of the African Virtual University in Nairobi, Kenya (www.avu.org is a project of the World Bank). Although Dr. Baldwin is now retired, he maintains active involvement with numerous scientific organizations, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, IEEE and the National Society of Professional Engineers. In addition, he is a fellow of the American Society of Engineering Education, as well as a chairman of the Engineering Deans Council. Dr. Baldwin began his career upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Notre Dame in 1954. He went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Master of Science in 1955. Prior to pursuing additional education, Dr. Baldwin served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. After rising to the rank of captain, he retired from military service and began working as a research engineer for the National Advisory Committee on Aeroscience in Cleveland, OH, when it went from aeronautics to aeroscience. At the same time, he attended Case Institute of Technology, where he received a Ph.D. in 1959. Dr. Baldwin began his career as an administrative professional after taking on the role of acting dean of the college of engineering at Colorado State University in 1964. Since then, he has amassed a wealth of experience in administrative and engineering roles across the nation.

In recognition of his lifelong commitment to education, Dr. Baldwin has been featured in a wide variety of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West. He was also the recipient of an award for plasma research from NASA, as well as the Kenneth Andrew Roe Award from the American Association of Engineering Societies and a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Notre Dame. From 1987 to 1989, Dr. Baldwin was recognized as a centennial professor with the American Society of Engineering Education.
