ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ, July 22, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Marina Jacobson
Answers Five of the Most Commonly Asked questions About Pregnancy

1. Can I exercise when pregnant?
It is beneficial to be fit prior to pregnancy. It is not recommended to start a new exercise program if you have not exercised before pregnancy. For those that already have an existing exercise routine, whether it is running or using the stair master, the routine usually can be continued with an uncomplicated pregnancy. Certain activities such as kick-boxing should probably be discontinued during pregnancy. But, always check with your doctor.

2. Can I color my hair during pregnancy ?
I recommend using vegetable hair coloring and avoid peroxide if possible. For those that need to use standard hair coloring, try to avoid hair coloring for the first trimester. There is no evidence in the medical literature that shows hair coloring causes damage to the fetus, however, there are no studies to show that it is completely safe either. Unfortunately, the answer is unknown.

3. What foods should I avoid when pregnant?
Certain fish may be high in mercury such as sword fish and should not be consumed in high quantities during pregnancy. All meat should be cooked "well done". Avoid all raw fish in sushi. Cheese should be "pasteurized". Consume fruits and vegetables and make sure to get plenty of fluids, especially in hot weather.

4. Is it dangerous to be intimate with your significant other?
For uncomplicated pregnancies intercourse is not dangerous. There are conditions in pregnancy such as placenta previa, when intercourse is not advisable. Always confirm with your physician first.

5. What is the best sleeping position?
During the first 12 weeks, a woman can sleep in any position that is comfortable for her. As the uterus enlarges, sleeping on the left side is advisable because it helps improve circulation from the lower extremities back to the heart. It is recommended not to sleep flat on one's back for prolonged periods of time.
