Dr. Peter Wiernik Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Wiernik is an esteemed oncologist and educator with an expertise in oncology as it pertains to leukemia and lymphoma. Born on June 16, 1939 in Crocket, TX to Harris and Molly Wiernik, Dr. Wiernik's journey into his field of practice was rather inspired. He recalls his time as a medical student on rounds with the chairman of the oncology department, who introduced him to a young patient diagnosed with leukemia. At the time, this patient's prognosis was exceptionally grim, and Dr. Wiernik used this as motivation to make progress within the field and advancements to help as many people as possible. Indeed, in the years since, he has made significant gains in oncology, including the introduction of chemotherapy treatment for patients battling leukemia and lymphoma.

In 1961, Dr. Wiernik received a BA with distinction from the University of Virginia. During his undergraduate career, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most celebrated undergraduate honors organization. He continued his studies at the University of Virginia and received an MD in 1965. Dr. Wiernik later traveled to study at the University of the Republic in Montevideo, Uruguay and became a Doctor Honoris Causa in 1982. In the 1980s, he was certified as a diplomate through both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Oncology.

Dr. Wiernik began his career as an intern at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital from 1965 to 1966. He became a resident at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and then at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In 1966, Dr. Wiernik assumed the role of senior assistant surgeon at the U.S. Public Health Service. He advanced through grades, eventually becoming a medical director. Later, he was a senior staff associate at the Baltimore Cancer Research Center, where he was promoted to chief of medical oncology and later director. Simultaneously, Dr. Wiernik held the role of associate director of the Cancer Treatment Division at the National Cancer Institute. Afterward, he became the associate director of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center -- a position he held from 1982 to 1998. Dr. Wiernik went on to become a professor of medicine and radiation oncology, and he was the director of the leukemia program at St. Lukes Roosevelt Medical Center from 2010 to 2013. Since 1998, he has served as the president of the Cancer Research Foundation. Also, Dr. Wiernik has served as an administrator and professor for many esteemed institutions, including the University of Maryland's School of Medicine and New York Medical College.

Dr. Wiernik is a fellow of the American Association for the Advance of Science, as well as the American College of Physicians, ASCO, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the International Society of Hematology, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Federation of Medical Research, the Eastern Division Council, and the National Board Council. He has been an active participant with the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, the International Society of Experimental Hematology, the New York Academy of Science, the American Society of Hospital Pharmacy, the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American Radium Society, the Polish Oncology Society, the Harvey Society, and the Uruguayan Hematology Society. Additionally, Dr. Wiernik is professionally aligned with the Uruguayan Academy of Medicine, the European Association of Cancer Research, the European Society of Hematology, the Application Review Panel, Faculty 1000 Biology, and the Association of Patient Orientated Research.

Over the years, Dr. Wiernik has contributed to a variety of medical journals, including Controversies in Oncology, in 1982 and Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, in 1986 to 1989. Incredibly, he has published more than 700 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Wiernik was a recipient of the Z Society Award and Byrd S. Leavell Hematology Award from the University of Virginia. In 2002, he was awarded a gold medal by the 1st Polish Congress of Oncology. He also received the Statesman Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the William F Johnson Award from St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, the Osserman Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund, and a 2016 Career Achievement Award from the University of Virginia. He is the former president of the American Radium Society, which presented him with a Janeway Medal.

Dr. Wiernik has appeared in a variety of Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 32nd and 33rd editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, as well as the 34th and 35th editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business. He was also featured in the 6th edition of Who's Who in American Education, the1st through 8th editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and the 2nd through 12th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
