Dr. R. Ross Holloway Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence and Archaeology and Art History

Since 1960 Dr. Holloway has been a leading scholar in the field of classical archaeology and related prehistory

CARRBORO, NC, January 31, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. R. Ross Holloway has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the process.

An archaeologist and university professor, Dr. Holloway has been prominent in his field since winning the Rome Prize Fellowship to the American Academy in Rome in 1960-62. In Rome he continued his work as a staff member of the Morgantina (Sicily) Excavations of Princeton University, from which he received his doctorate in the same year 1960: his previous degrees were his AB, summa cum laude, from Amherst College, and MA from the University of Pennsylvania. While in Rome he initiated his remarkable output of publications, which had reached over one hundred titles (including periodical articles) by the time his Festschrift, "Koine," was presented to him by colleagues and students in 2009. Following a year as Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1964 he joined the faculty of Brown University retiring as Elisha Benjamin Andrews Professor in 2006 and serving as the Director of the University's Center for Old World Archaeology and Art, 1978-1987 and 1994-2001. He returned to Rome as Professor in Charge of the School of Classical Studies of the American Academy in Rome in 2005-06. He also served as Consulting Curator at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design and editor of the publication of the Museum's classical collection. He was president of the Centro Internazionale di Studi Numismatici in Naples, Italy, 1980-86. He holds honorary degrees from Amherst College and from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, Honorary Member of the Royal Belgian Numismatic Society, Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute and of the National Institute of Etruscan and Italic Studies (Italy).

It is, however, Dr. Holloway's archaeological excavations that mark him out as leader in his field: first in Athens on the north slope of the Acropoli, then at Satrianum in Lucania (southern Italy), next at Buccino, in the hinterland of Salerno, where his work included the discovery of the earliest known bronze blades in the Italian peninsula, at La Muculufa on the south coast of Sicily, where he documented the first known Sicilian regional sanctuary of the Early Bronze Age (third millennium B.C.), and finally on the island of Ustica, forty nautical miles north of Palermo, where he and his associates excavated an impressive citadel of the closing centuries of the second millennium B.C.

This catalogue of successes in the field of excavation in no way should diminish Dr. Holloway's standing as a student of ancient Greek art and architecture and of Greek coins, or of his studies in Roman antiquities, culminating in his "Constantine and Rome," 2004.
