Certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Daroff has held increasingly prominent roles in the medical community throughout his career. Noteworthy positions have included his time as chief of staff and senior vice president of academic affairs at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and director of the ocular motor neurophysiology laboratories at both the Miami and Cleveland Veterans Administration Hospitals Currently, he serves as Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Associate Dean and Physician Director of Development at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Daroff attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 and an MD in 1961. He completed an internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, followed by a residency in neurology at Yale-New Haven Medical Center, after which he served as the first, and for six months, the only Neurologists for the US forces in Vietnam. Thereafter,he went on to complete a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.
Dr. Daroff has achieved success due to his medical training, experience and desire to help patients understand medical diagnoses and treatments in an area of medicine that can often be frustrating or confusing. In recognition of professional excellence, Dr. Daroff was the recipient of the Ernst Jung Gold Medal, the Silver Jubilee Oration Award from the Medical College of Trivandrum in India, the John H. Budd Distinguished Member Award from the Cleveland Medical Academy, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Neurosciences India Group, and an AB Baker Award for lifetime achievement in neurological education. Most recently, Dr. Daroff was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Daroff remains at the top of his field through active participation in the medical community. He is an honorary member of the American Headache society for which he served as president. He was chair of the American Neurological Association and was editor in chief of NEUROLOGY, the world's largest circulating journal. He is also an honorary member of the American Academy of Neurology. In addition, he is a member of the World Federation of Neurology, for which he served as chairman of both the finance and publications committee. He is also a member of many national and international committees such as Society for the Advancement of Alzheimer's Research and Treatment, the Saudi Alzheimer Disease Association, the World Neurology Board, the International Neurology Forum, the World Association of Medical Editors, the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, among many others.
