Dr. Simon C. Towler Recognized by Worldwide Branding for Excellence in Hospital & Health Care

Dr. Towler feels that being appointed as executive director of health policy and clinical reform in the WA Department of Health in 2005 has been one of his greatest achievements

Towler, Intensive Care Practitioner, Senior Health Officer and Service 4 Co-Lead for Fiona Stanley Hospital, has been recognized by Worldwide Branding for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in hospital and health care.

Dr. Towler has amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience over the course of a career that spans more than 35 years, and he continuously strives for excellence in his every endeavor. He specializes in intensive care practice, and in taking on a leadership role in patient blood management, including Chair of the National Patient Blood Management Steering Committee with the National Blood Authority. He is responsible for commissioning 16 services that will be provided when the hospital opens in late 2014, and advising on blood management, new technology and medical research to the WA Department of Health. Fiona Stanley Hospital is a government agency that provides Health care services. Dr. Towler feels that achieving Fellowships in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, being appointed head of service on the retirement of his mentor, Dr. Geoff Clarke, in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal Perth Hospital, being elected president of the Australian Medical Association Western Australian Branch in 2000, being awarded a fellowship of the Australian Medical Association in 2001, and being appointed the to position of executive director of health policy and clinical reform in the WA Department of Health in 2005 and subsequently chief medical officer in 2006 have been some of the most greatest achievements of his career, thus far, along with his serving two triennia on the Council of the National Health and Medical Research Council -- Australia's peak health policy and research funding body.

Dr. Towler was the chief medical officer with the Department of Health in Western Australia from 2006 to 2012. He was responsible for initiating and promoting the model of Health Networks in Western Australia to link clinicians and patients in delivering more responsive, evidence informed care. Producing 55 published 'Models of Care,' the networks remain the nucleus of emerging communities of practice. Dr. Towler remains a participant with the WA Health Networks. He is an adjunct professor with both Curtin University and Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia.

Upon reflecting on a rewarding career, he attributes his success to his value on collaboration and partnership, his passion, commitment, and his integrity. He became involved in his current role after moving to Western Australia to pursue a career in intensive care medicine. He had previously worked at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London after completing his fellowship in anaesthesia. He later chose to move into roles as a clinician manager in order to bring together clinicians and administrators to improve health services.

Dr. Towler received a Bachelor of Medicine and a Batchelor of Surgery from Monash University. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and of the College of Intensive Care Medicine. He is also a member of the Australian Medical Association, the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society, the Consumers Health Forum of Australia, the National Health Performance Authority, and the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority. He is a Fellow of the Australian Medical Association, and he donates his time to a number of charitable organizations. Dr. Towler is also a sponsor to two children through World Vision International.

In the years to come, Dr. Towler will be working with organizations promoting improved evidence in acute medicine, with a special interest in improving care of patients at risk of needing a transfusion. He will continue to explore the role of clinicians in understanding the development, assessment and safe introduction of new technologies in health care.
