Dr. Susan Schwartz-Giblin Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Neuroscience

Dr. Schwartz-Giblin, professor and graduate dean emeritus was instrumental in the development of the joint Ph.D. biomedical engineering program at the State University of New York Downstate Medical College



    BROOKLYN, NY, April 12, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Susan Schwartz-Giblin has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Schwartz-Giblin is a neuroscientist and educator who has been highly regarded as an expert in amino acid neurotransmission and its role in reproductive behavior in rodents since establishing her career in 1966. As Graduate Dean at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center she developed the joint Ph.D. biomedical engineering program with Polytechnic University in Brooklyn. Previously, she came to prominence in the Laboratory of Neurobiology and Behavior as one of five women associate professors at Rockefeller University, professor of physiology and dean of the graduate school at Hahnemann University and the Medical College of Pennsylvania, (now Drexel University Medical School) and a NATO postdoctoral fellow at McGill University in the laboratory of Kresimir Krnjevic. Other noteworthy roles held in her career include dean of graduate studies and professor of neurology in the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, head of the neurophysiology laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry of the New York University Medical Center and. adjunct assistant professor for the City University of New York. In recognition of her professional excellence, Dr. Schwartz-Giblin earned various fellowships and grants from prestigious entities including the U.S. Public Health Service, Whitehall Foundation and a citation classic award from the Current Contents Journal. In addition, she was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.

Before establishing herself professionally, Dr. Schwartz-Giblin prepared for her career by investing in her education. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in zoology from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1959 where she was mentored and encouraged by Professor Ingrith Deyrup and a Ph.D. in physiology from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1965 where her thesis research was supervised by Professor Vahe Amassian. To stay at the top of her field, she is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science the International Brain Research Organization and the Society for Neuroscience. In addition, she took on supervisory responsibilities for her five PhD students and postdocs in her laboratory at Rockefeller University and mentored more than 70 PhD graduate students each year at the Downstate School of Graduate Studies. She also took the opportunity to encourage women that it was possible to combine motherhood with a career in scientific research by addressing the Women In Neuroscience Society (WINS) at the SfN (Society for Neuroscience) meeting and the biology majors at Barnard College. To increase her impact on the field she has taken on the role of reviewer and contributor of numerous articles to peer-reviewed professional journals. As she looks to the future, Dr. Schwartz-Giblin intends to continue encouraging and promoting the careers of women in scientific research.
