He also developed a patent for novel intermetallic alloys for automotive and aeroengine applications. Since 2003, Dr. Smarsly has served as a representative of advanced materials for MTU Aero Engines GmbH in Munich following his time as head of advanced materials. Previously, he worked as a senior materials engineer for Motoren and Turbinen Union, engineering consultant for the Consultant Agency in Cologne, and research scientist for the German Aeronautical and Aerospace Organization. Since 1995, Dr. Smarsly has been an evaluator for the European Commission in a number of prominent countries, including Belgium and Germany.
