Dysport is the first product brought to the national aesthetic market that could effectively rival BOTOX Cosmetic.
According to Dysport's Britain manufacturer, Ispen Limited, the product is a simple yet effective, non-surgical treatment to smoothe away or improve frown-lines and wrinkles that works by relaxing facial muscles on the forehead. Like BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport consists of the same basic ingredient, Botulinum Toxin A.
Dr. Elizabeth Hagberg owns Skin Rejuvenation Clinic with her husband, Dr. Mark Hagberg. She said the decision to add Dysport to the clinic's list of wrinkle- fighting injectables was an easy one. "In this field, you have to stay on top of the trends. Until now we haven't seen a service we felt was a safe and viable alternative to Botox," she explained. "The addition of Dysport means that we can meet the needs of those patients who request this new product."
Dr. Hagberg also feels this type of brand competition will be a good thing for clients. "We hope that this new direct competition with Botox will mean lower prices for consumers in the future," she said.
Dysport was approved by the FDA for both therapeutic and aesthetic purposes in April, 2009. The company Medicis is currently bringing Dysport to cosmetic clinics and medical spas in the United States for the treatment of glabellar lines (the creases or wrinkles that appear between your brows, also known in the industry as the "11 lines".)
