Ebony Awakening Celebrates Freedom Rides With Awards Banquet at Scientology's Historic Fort Harrison

    CLEARWATER, FL, July 15, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ebony Awakening (http:/www.ebonyawakening.org) presented 6 awards on June 18th in tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Riders, at an event which was attended by some 220 people from across Tampa Bay. Community officials and leaders as well as several community groups were present.

Pat Harney, board member of Ebony Awakening and also the Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology in Clearwater, the owner of the Fort Harrison where the event was held, in welcoming the guests noted that L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religious philosophy (http://www.lronhubbard.org/#/timeline-home) had said, ""If a System could hear, if there were somebody to talk to, if it cared, if the men in charge did not become so devoted to their own interests to the callous exclusion of the sufferings of all others, one might achieve political evolution to saner plateaus rather than revolution."

Two kinds of awards were presented. One award was, The Amanda Ambrose Soldiers of the Heart award, which was presented to Ms. Pettway and to the Muhammad family. The other was, The Stephanie Hamilton Community Spirit award,

The main award was presented to Freedom Rider, Ms. Kredell Petway, who joined the Freedom Rides growing up in Pensacola Florida under the direction of her father. The remaining 6 honorees received awards for continuing the spirit of the Freedom Rides through their extensive community work. These included David and Nayyirah Muhammad and their family members for their combined thousands of hours of community volunteer work, Ms. Jai Hinson, choreographer and performing arts teacher who has helped over 10,000 youth find and develop their artistic talents, Ms. Annie Tyrell, Executive Director of the Willa Carson Health Resource Center, Ms. Helen Neal-Ali, author and life coach, Mr. James Evans, former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, motivational speaker and author and Mr. Ronnie Stevens Islam, ambassador for the World Literacy Crusade.

Entertainment featured multi-platinum Grammy award winning singer/songwriter David Pomeranz, two different sets of dancers - the Blessed Juniors and the Million Dollar Steppers - and Men of Note, Busch Gardens' signature quartet, who got the crowd to their feet and onto the dance floor with the smooth sounds of Motown and other popular '60's tunes.

What is Ebony Awakening?
Since 1970, the non-profit Ebony Awakening (http://www.ebonyawakening.org) consisting of over 400 members and supporters from diverse ethnicities, religions and backgrounds, has worked to improve the lives of African Americans by implementing programs to eliminate criminality, drug addiction, immortality and illiteracy. Ebony Awakening was founded by the late Amanda Ambrose an entertainer for over 60 years who through her experience in TV and radio, as well as performing in Las Vegas, Hollywood, Broadway, and around the world, became very concerned with the problems facing African American communities. Her daughter Stephanie Hamilton was the organizer and administrative head of Ebony Awakening International.
