E-Cigarette May Save Latino Lives

The leading preventable cause of the death for the U.S Hispanic population is tobacco. Although Latinos usually have a lower percentage of smokers for their culture when compared with other ethnicities, the fact that nearly 1/5 of the Latino population smokes is still a factor. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Latino men and second among Latino women.1
Lung cancer possibly can be prevented by quitting smoking. However few resources and strategies have been developed to help Latinos quit smoking. The cessation rates in the US are minimal. Programs, drugs and going cold turkey are options that have a fail rate of 92-97%. The next option is to look for an alternative to smoking, one that is a healthier option.
The electronic cigarette may be a harm reduction option to take the place of regular cigarettes. There are over 4,000 chemicals in regular cigarettes, hundreds of which have been proven carcinogenic. The electronic cigarette only has 20 ingredients and all have been tested, none are carcinogenic. The electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette, looks and feels like a cigarette and delivers nicotine to the smoker.
